Oct. 7 - Santorini 🇬🇷

The day starts with the clatter of rain on the roof and against the wooden shutters of our villa, and echos in the faint daylight of dawn as it bounces off the watery surface of our pool. I’m sure the Greeks are elated to see this heavy rain soak the hillsides and fill their cisterns but as our last day on Santorini it’s a sad sight to see. After our breakfast the clouds part, at least for a couple of hours, long enough for us to walk to the edge of the caldera on the outskirts of Thíra to admire the views and to get a little exercise. For the last few days we’ve been about as energetic as a couple of sloths, known more for hanging upside down in the Amazon jungle than for any kind of physical activity! The view are gorgeous and the 6,000 steps are a welcome change too. Afterward we reward ourselves with some downtime by the pool, each reading our new books, and a cocktail to whet the whistle. Tonight we’ll celebrate the end of our 6-month adventure as we contemplate the long road home from Santorini to Athens then to London-Heathrow followed by bus to London-Gatwick, then onward to Calgary, Seattle and finally Palm Springs. It has been the most amazing summer imaginable. We’ve met new and old friends along the way, enjoyed the most beautiful sunrises and sunsets in eighteen different countries on three different continents. We’ve lived like the rich and famous, and also like backpacking college students. But mostly we’ve enjoyed new experiences and we’ve loved each other every day of this journey of togetherness. We weren’t sure how 6 months on the road, living out of suitcases and being side-by-side 24x7 was going to go. Fortunately, it was even better than we could have imagined. Thanks for being a part of our summer of 2019!
