May 15th is my Mom’s birthday. She would have been 91 today so I’m thinking about her as we tour around Giardini Naxos, Castelmola and Taormina on Sicily. It’s another beautiful day in this unassuming but popular resort town with vacationers attracted to its long stretch of sand along its bay. Mt. Etna, Europe’s tallest (11,000 ft) and most active volcano is doing its thing, smoking and letting us know it’s not dormant! Castelmola sits high atop the tallest mountain close to the harbour and Taormina is on the second tallest hill both are “must visit sites” with spectacular vistas to the sea. The views are unbeatable and the Greco-Roman theatre offers framed views of Mt. Etna and the sea below.
