June 15 - Copenhagen changing 🇩🇰

Updated: Jul 31, 2019

Today we rode our bikes (makes bike riding in Amsterdam feel easy) to watch the changing of the guard at the Danish Royal Family‘s residence, Amalienborg Palace. The palace, originally built for the Danish nobleman Count Carl Ahlefeldt in 1706 is now home to the Royal family. The Danish Royal Family inhabit a range of residences around Denmark. The Royal family traditionally occupies different royal residences during different seasons of the year. In summer, Queen Margarethe resides at Marselisborg Palace or Graasten Palace. In the winter, she resides at Amalienborg. Sometimes members of the royal family spend time on the Royal Yacht Dannebrog, especially when on official visits overseas and on summer cruises in Danish waters. It’s just like the Calgarians who summer in Invermere, B.C. or the Toscana residents who summer in other parts of the country and abroad to escape the summer heat!

You see, we really are more alike than different.

There are bikes everywhere in Copenhagen. 50% of all Danes living in the city ride bikes daily in place of autos. It’s Amsterdam on steriods!

Frederik’s Church or the Marble Church as it is commonly known sits just behind the Amalienborg Palace

City Hall. They have a secret pancake recipe that they use to make special pancakes for head-of-state visits and other municipal celebrations & events. Unfortunately no special events during our visit!

Bike traffic can be worse than car traffic if you’re not used to it. Watch out! We lived to talk about it but we had our moments!!
