Our journey started today in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, as we bid farewell to the “famous potatoes“ state and drove west to Seattle. Enroute we enjoyed the Columbia Gorge and a stop in Tumble Creek to check out our building lot and the progress they’ve made with roads and sewers. Of course, a stop at the scenic viewing spot for a quick stretch and a glimpse at the stunning scenery was mandatory. Until recent times, the Wanapum Indians inhabited the banks of the Columbia River. The Wanapums were a very religious and peaceful people surviving on fish, venison, berries and roots. There were expert fishermen, using nets, spears and woven willow traps. The Wanapums had never fought the whites, signed no treaties, and thus received no special rights. Although numbering in the thousands at one time, the Wanapums are now virtually extinct.
