We awoke to a fresh snowfall on the mountaintop at St. Moritz....and it’s July 15th! Rainfall turned to snowfall and the whole place looked different in the morning. We had a leisurely morning with a walk around Lake St. Moritz and a tour of the town before we launched for Italy. Interestingly, as we descended from the high Alps to Lago di Como the weather warmed and the sun made an appearance. The countryside is stunningly beautiful and Lake Como is amazing. It’s little wonder that so many Germans and Swiss come here to spend long weekends and enjoy the more temperate climate and the beauty of the Lake District. It’s scarcely a 90 minute drive from St. Moritz on good roads with beautiful mountain scenery, though the descent to the Lake with its dozens of switchback turns isn’t for the faint of heart. We chose to set up camp in Menaggio since it’s on the water taxi route to Bellagio and Verenna making it easy to get around and enjoy all the best that this region has to offer.
