Cinco de Mayo and the Galapagos

Updated: May 10, 2019

It’s Cinco de Mayo but we’re celebrating more than Mexico’s military victory in 1862 over the French forces of Napoleon III. Today we’re flying to Baltra Island in the Galapagos to start our 5-day cruise of exploration aboard the Sea Star Journey, a 16-passenger yacht. Our journey will take us to the islands of Santa Cruz, Chinese Hat, Genovesa, Santiago and Bartolome. This place is a giant biosphere of bird and water species, and in many respects we feel what Charles Darwin must have felt when he landed here on the Beagle in 1835. Darwin discovered several species of finches that varied from island to island which helped him to develop his theory of natural selection. The Ecuadorian Government has done a wonderful job of preserving this ecological marvel for all the world to enjoy, hopefully for centuries to come.
